New tutor

Hi, I'm currently a first-year Medical student at Imperial College London with over three years of tutoring experience across GCSEs, A-levels, and the UCAT. Having sat these exams relatively recently myself, I understand the challenges students face because I've been through them. I know how overwhelming revision can feel, how difficult certain topics can seem at first, and what examiners are really looking for. This perspective allows me to relate to my students and provide practical advice that goes beyond simply teaching the content. I began tutoring shortly after completing my own GCSEs and A-levels, and since then I have worked with students of different abilities and learning styles, including students with ADHD. One of the things I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing a student's confidence grow over time. Academic success often comes from believing in your own ability, and I aim to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and challenging themselves. Before each lesson, I carefully review a student's progress, identify areas for improvement, and plan sessions around their individual goals. My teaching style is patient, engaging, and highly personalised, with a focus on building a strong conceptual understanding while remaining exam-focused throughout. This ensures that every lesson is productive, targeted, and tailored to the student's needs. During lessons, I encourage active participation rather than passive learning. I use a variety of resources, including visual explanations, worked examples, exam questions, and interactive discussions to help students fully understand difficult concepts. I believe that when students truly understand a topic, they are far more likely to retain information and apply it successfully in exams. Outside of lessons, I provide guidance on revision techniques, independent study, and exam strategy. Whether you're aiming to improve your confidence, achieve top grades at GCSE or A-level, or prepare for the UCAT and medical school applications, I am committed to helping you reach your goals and fulfil your potential. I am currently studying Medicine at Imperial College London, one of the UK's leading medical schools. My academic journey has been driven by a passion for learning and a commitment to achieving high standards. At A-level, I achieved three A* grades in Biology (AQA), Chemistry (AQA), and Mathematics (Edexcel) . At GCSE, I achieved nine Grade 9s, including Triple Science (AQA), Mathematics (Edexcel), Further Mathematics (Edexcel), English Language (AQA), English Literature (AQA), Computer Science, Geography, Religious Education, and Design & Technology. Having completed GCSEs and A-levels relatively recently, I have a strong understanding of current specifications, exam techniques, and the challenges students face. I know first-hand what it takes to achieve top grades and gain admission to a competitive university course, allowing me to provide students with practical, up-to-date advice alongside subject knowledge. As a medical student, I continue to develop my expertise in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning. Studying medicine has strengthened my ability to break down complex concepts into simple, understandable explanations, a skill that is invaluable when helping students overcome difficult topics. Alongside my studies, I have over three years of tutoring experience across GCSE and A-level subjects, particularly Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. I also have experience supporting students preparing for the UCAT and medical school applications. Working with a wide range of students, including those with ADHD, has enabled me to develop a flexible and student-centred approach that adapts to different learning styles and needs. My specialisms include the sciences, mathematics, and UCAT preparation. By combining strong academic credentials with extensive tutoring experience, I aim to help students build confidence, develop effective study habits, and achieve the grades they are capable of attaining.

New tutor

Hi! I'm Jenna, a recently graduated Psychology student with a passion for learning and helping others achieve their full potential. As a determined problem-solver, I have always loved maths - the satisfaction I get from solving a particularly difficult problem is what makes it my favourite! From solving algebraic equations in early GCSE to working out financial budgets for my university life, maths has always been exciting for me. Hopefully I can share this passion with you, and have some fun along the way. I have some tutoring experience across a range of contexts, from helping year 7s struggling with secondary school maths topics, to regularly assisting university students with psychology questions. At the forefront of my focus is a student's inherent grasp of the topic. I will continually check your understanding, and I am willing to approach the topic from a different angle in order to elevate your understanding and knowledge. I am determined to help you in any way that I can so you can achieve your personal academic goals and importantly, boost your confidence in your own mathematical ability. There are no stupid questions in lessons with me - I will encourage you to stick with it and keep asking for help and guidance until you could do it in your sleep! It's not always about top grades: a solid understanding of mathematical concepts and familiarity with numerical rules come first, but good marks almost always come hand in hand with this. I look forward to tutoring you!

Tutoring at Key Stage 4

What is Key Stage 4?

Key Stage 4 (KS4) comprises Year 10 and Year 11, when students are aged between 14 and 16. During this time they are working towards their GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), which are a gateway to further education and career paths.

What subjects are covered in Key Stage 4?

The national curriculum offers the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Modern foreign languages
  • Design and technology
  • Art and design
  • Music
  • Physical education
  • Citizenship
  • Computing

Compulsory subjects that must be taken by all students are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Computing
  • Physical education
  • Citizenship

Schools must also offer at least one subject from each of these areas:

  • Arts (e.g. art and design, music, drama)
  • Design and technology (e.g. DT, graphics, cooking and nutrition)
  • Humanities (e.g. combined humanities, history, geography, RE)
  • Modern foreign languages (e.g. French, German, Spanish)

Academic students may be encouraged to take the English Baccalaureate, or EBacc. This is not a separate qualification, but a combination of six different GCSEs: English, maths, two sciences, a language and either history or geography.

Schools must also provide relationships, sex and health education and Religious Education (RE). Parents can ask for their children to be taken out of sex education lessons and all or some of RE lessons.

What is the focus of KS4?

The focus at KS4 is around preparing pupils for their transition to post-16 provision at the end of Year 11, for example A-levels, BTECs or the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Most students work towards national qualifications, usually their GCSEs. This is when they will start to study subjects that align with their strengths, interests and future goals, and at a greater depth than they have been able to before.

How to choose a KS4 tutor

Many students struggle with the one-size-fits-all approach often found in classroom settings. This can lead them to develop a negative mindset towards learning and a loss in confidence in their abilities. They can fall behind in their schoolwork and lose the motivation to put in the required effort to succeed.

KS4 tutors can provide targeted support in specific subjects where students may be struggling or need extra help to excel. This can be especially helpful if the student has special educational needs such as ADHD or dyslexia.

While most final exams take place at the end of Year 11, coursework and assessments are completed throughout the stage, so it’s important students always perform to their full potential.

GoStudent tutors have expertise in specific subject areas on the curriculum and offer a personalised approach tailored to individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. They can close knowledge gaps, keep learning on track and help with exam preparation.

In addition, they can teach effective study techniques and time management strategies which can significantly improve performance, not only in KS4 but for the rest of the student’s academic career.
